Pride Art | Pride Art Returns This Summer

ShanghaiPRIDE continues its 12th annual celebration with Pride Art, opening on August 9 and continuing through September 6. This year’s theme, “Perspectives: from the community and allies,” represents a collective statement of the LGBTQ community, its allies and supporters, and brings together 17 emerging artists working in various mediums that include photography, printmaking, digital and mixed media.

The opening ceremony will be held at ideaPod on August 9, 16:00-18:00.

As part of ShanghaiPRIDE’s line-up every year since its inception in 2009, Pride Art is an inclusive platform dedicated to showcasing the works of LGBTQ artists, allies and supporters with an open call exhibition. This year, under the overarching theme of ShanghaiPRIDE 2020, “敢晒,敢骄傲 Raise the Pride”, organizers will be showcasing artwork from Cao Xue, Chen Jing, CK Chiu, Connor Yang, Denis Sdobnov, Diana Schweinert, Ding Tie Lin, Lincoln Lin, NYSometimes, Oleg Chebotarev, Qiurui Du, Ruya Qian, Shawn Zhang, Shou Xing, Wang Hua, Xu Xing Xing and Yang Yi Liang.

Pride Art will be hosted at The Bund House, a 2.0 space project by ideaPod at The Bund. “Perspectives” is organized into multiple sections that unfold across the premises. Grounded in the belief that art is a universal language, the exhibition touches on themes as diverse as identity, gender equality, the history of Chinese pop culture and artistic inspirations derived from scientific research. Here, viewers witness the experiences of the LGBTQ community in the world’s most populous country, China — and in one of its most rapidly developing cities, Shanghai.

“This year is challenging due to the pandemic. Pride Art is planned under a difficult environment filled with uncertainty, and postponed from the Pride month in June to August,” said Kay Tsoi, Director of Pride Art. “We are happy our team managed to present the exhibition, especially in this time, to connect people together through the universal language – art.”
