Recap | Riding Proud for IDAHOTB
The 2019 ShanghaiPRIDE Rainbow Bike Ride, a warm-up event to Pride11, was held last Saturday (18-May) to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB).
Participants were blessed with pleasant weather, after many days of rain. Six teams set off from every corner of Shanghai, snaking through the city via different routes before converging at Cotton’s – a favorite F&B venue of ours located on Xinhua Road.
Each of the six teams represented one color of the rainbow flag. Riders gathered at the starting point decked in Pride T-shirts provided by Old Navy, and sporting customized Pride backpacks. After the opening remarks and group photos, each team set off, hearts pumping with pride to ride in support of the LGBTQ community.
Each of our six cycling routes were specially designed to take in different parts of Shanghai, passing through the busy streets of Shanghai, taking scenic riverside routes, and passing by famous landmarks such as the Shanghai Museum and Minhang Cultural Park. This year’s purple route was designed exclusively for participating students from Songjiang University Town.
Between 10:30am and 11:30am, the six teams arrived at Cotton’s in quick succession. A team of well-prepared volunteers were waiting to welcome them, taking group photos for them and arranging a place for much needed rest.
The atmosphere at Cotton’s reached its peak by the time the last team arrived. The participants from all six teams gathered as volunteers recorded the monumental moment on camera.
Cotton’s prepared a special menu for our participants and invited guest DJ E-Cosmic, to spin for us.
