Red Ribbon Gala Dinner Returns 1st December, 2017

According to the Shanghai Municipal Center For Disease Control & Prevention (Shanghai CDC), there were 1,959 reports of HIV infection in Shanghai from 1st January, 2016 to 20th November, 2016, and more than 20% are between ages 18 and 24, an 80% increase year-on-year. Nationwide, there are more than 570,000 people living with HIV/AIDS as at October 2015. Of that number, 9,152 are youths aged between 15 and 24.

The figures show us that the trend of HIV/AIDS infections among the younger age group is still increasing. However, with very limited and lack of access to proper information, it adds to the challenge in HIV/AIDS prevention. There is an urgent need to not only raise awareness on prevention of HIV/AIDS among the younger generation, but also to inform them on what to do, how to get treatment, and where to receive counseling should they be infected.

In the past two years, the Red Ribbon Gala Dinner, held in conjunction with World AIDS Day and with support from individuals and corporations, raised a combined total of ¥110,000 for Shanghai AIDSLIFE Center and Shanghai Qingai Health Center.

Shanghai Qingai Health Center is a charity organization that has official government qualification and is established by motivated college students. The center serves the youth community in Shanghai by promoting safe sex measures, providing professional training, maintaining discussion forums, providing psychological intervention services, and providing counseling on and testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. It aims to help the Shanghai youth community develop a positive life attitude, advocate a healthy lifestyle, and nurture a pleasant social environment. They also have full time staff giving consultation and round-the-clock emergency assistance.

With the funds raised last year, they recruited 40 student volunteers from 19 colleges covering 26 campuses. These volunteers were trained by Shanghai CDC to perform HIV saliva tests and provide HIV/AIDS related consultation on campus. They will also host a competition on HIV/AIDS prevention proposals within the student community to facilitate a student-driven HIV/AIDS prevention program that aims at equipping students with the knowledge on HIV/AIDS and safe sex, and encouraging them to be proactive in HIV/AIDS prevention.
