Event Recap: ShPTF V – Collective Rage wraps up the ShPTF with collective love!

ShanghaiPRIDE 2017 has finally concluded and the last ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival act, Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties, shown at The Market last weekend provided the perfect end.

As the audience enters the theatre, the huge neon-sign became an attraction foreshadowing the theme of the night. Director Lelia TahaBurt expressed her appreciation for the enthusiastic audience before the show, and for the support from ShanghaiPRIDE. The actresses stepped onto the stage to the rythmic beats of hip hop and loud cheers of the audience.

As the title of the play suggests, the story showcases five different characters and their interconnected relationships – all by the name of Betty (inspired by Betty Boop). Betty 1 is wealthy but angsty because of her unconcerned cheating husband. Betty 2 is a girl with repressed desires who finally sees herself for who she really is. Betty 3 is a powerhouse of sex and confidence but found herself lost in the longing for fame. Betty 5 owns a gym after getting out of prison who seems hard and rough on the surface but is in fact, struggling to find love.

The passion of every actoress.brings the characters to life exploring love, anger, friendship, despair, desires and what it means to be a woman, and to love a woman. The crowd laughed, cried and was wowed all at the same time.

Thank you to One World Theater for producing this entertaining and powerful play. Thank you to the Market for providing a wonderful space.
