Aks Film+Dialogue Festival Presents…

Chuppan Chupai (2013  USA)
Director:Saadat Munir & Saad Khan
Saad Khan and Saadat Munir’s debut feature follows four queer individuals in Pakistan’s urban centres, focusing on their internal conflicts and the constant game of ‘hide and seek’ that they are forced to play from the mainstream population. With a particular focus on the country’s transgender community, the film poses questions and proposes new ideas on LGBTQ community, religion, underground gay life, social acceptance and queer family.

Short Film

Katchi (2016 Pakistan)
Director: Amina Malik
Saad falls outside the gender binary. Growing up, he strives for his true self but encounters several gruesome events of bullying and being molested by other boys in school. His mother discreetly acknowledges her son’s desires of being different. Later in his life, Saad refuses to suppress his true identity and partakes in a theatre show reflecting transgender lives. His mother does come to see the show but has she truly accepted Saad?

As I Remember (2015 Canada)
Director: Saqib Noman
As I Remember chronicles the life events of Saqib from childhood to the present. The journey starts with his cute friendship with Maaz as they run through the streets of the city, and takes us through the grim events of bullying and abuse from his peers and family on the account of being “different.”

Panel Discussion

As part of our ongoing outreach to queer festivals around Asia, ShPFF is honoured to invite Aks Film + Dialogue Festival to present a special program of films from Pakistan. Conceived in 2012, Aks Festival is a hugely important cultural event for the underground queer community in the conservative Islamic republic. We are joined tonight by festival organisers Saadat Munir and Neeli Rana, and filmmaker Amina Malick, for a panel discussion on the trans and LGB communities in Pakistan, and on the cultural and social goals of Aks.

Time: 7:00PM
Address: Xin Café, 462 Changle Rd., nr. S. Shaanxi Rd., Xuhui
