Event Recap: ShanghaiPRIDE 2016 Theme Launch

17-May, International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) ShanghaiPRIDE announced its 2016 campaign as “生为平常I Am Me” and started the countdown to the weeklong celebration from 17 to 26-June.

Branding Coordinator Evie Wu opened the event by reflecting on previous year’s campaigns. In 2014, ShanghaiPRIDE celebrated the unity of all LGBTQ organizations and partners with “Better Together”. The following year, it was “Love is Our Future”, reflecting that love exists within unions of individuals in LGBTQ community, within recognized same-sex marriages, and also within the support and acceptance from families, friends, colleagues and allies regardless of their lifestyle, gender or sexuality.

Raymond Phang, Director of ShanghaiPRIDE, recounted the process through which this year’s theme was conceived. Working in collaboration with Wunderman Shanghai and with inspiration from global LGBTQ movements, the theme for this year’s ShanghaiPRIDE was officially set for “生为平常 I Am Me”.

The idea is that everyone should own their identity with pride, regardless of gender, sexuality or other forms of identity. Whilst many people in our community still struggle emotionally or in their daily lives, we have witnessed significant change in the past year. ShanghaiPRIDE hopes to revisit the “Me” that is original, true and commonplace.

A trailer of the 2016 campaign video was presented, alongside campaign posters. The film’s producer, Summer Wu, and director, Francis Chen, shared behind-the-scene photos from the shoot, which featured famous LGBTQ leaders like Li Yinhe, Qiubai, Fan Popo, as well as other active supporters of the LGBTQ community. The first “I Am Me” trailer: “I Am Me – with Li Yinhe” was released at the event. Marketing Coordinator Hans Ibrahim recounted the conception of the campaign visuals.
