Women Up! is a professional women’s networking event which aims to empower women of all orientation and identities to have greater confidence in pursuing a career or owning a business. This month, hear from four entrepreneurs their experiences and challenges building their businesses. These female leaders will share their struggles and secrets to success as well as critical skills such as interview skills, networking skills, and analytical skills that are pertinent across multiple industries and professional levels. Topic: Loneliness and uncertainty are friends to an entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, you often have to deal with loneliness and learn how to treat loneliness as your dear friend. Many a times, no one can make decisions for you but yourself. How do you handle uncertainty and not let it turn into nervousness and get under your skin?

Ling Zeng is the founder and owner of the 8 Art Hotels. She is also a partner of WE Design Partners. She received her Masters in Design Studies from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 2009, and Masters in Environmental and Urban Planning from the Architecture School at University of Virginia in 2004.

Topic: How to maintain a high quality mindset? Successful formula: don’t forget the beginner’s mindset, always.

Edith Sum is the CEO of Smart World Holdings Ltd. The core businesses of her company include label-printing for the packaging industry, manufacturing art derivatives products, and retail health and beauty products.   She is also a business-coach and life-coach.

Besides her success in business, Edith is enthusiastic in social work. She is a member of Pudong Shanghai CPPCC and Shanghai Overseas Friendship Association, and Honorary Vice President of Hong Kong – Shanghai Youth Association. She spends her free time on outdoor activities, promoting and training for wiser ball game. Edith is a devout follower of Buddhism.


Johanna Hoopes

Topic: “How I develop my business as a woman in the sports industry in China ”

Johanna Hoopes has an MBA in strategic marketing and international communications with over 10 years of experience managing media and brand experience projects for global clients. She has spent the last 7 years in China building her full-service PR and event management agency, Dragon Group Asia. She enjoys working with a range of clients from corporate multinationals like NFL, Under Armour, Pac-12, UFC, Porsche and HSBC to supporting grassroots non-profits and start-ups. As the former editor of City Weekend Shanghai and Forbes Travel Guide for China, Johanna maintains strong contacts in media, producing video, photo and written content and organizing media tours for Stephen Curry, Joe Montana, Reggie Bush, Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice to name a few. She has an unparalleled knack for developing strategic partnerships and a social media following that engages thousands of followers across English and Chinese platforms. Johanna often acts as a connector and spokesperson for North American brands entering the Chinese market.

Louise Lai

Topic: Impact Investing- Turning profit and making a change in the world

Louise Lai brings 25 years of professional experience in relationship management, brand strategy, training and entrepreneurship to clients throughout Asia. She began her career in the service and hospitality industry where she learned early that it is a combination of carefully crafted brand experiences and great customer service that positions companies for growth. After 20 years of applying this principle as a management consultant she founded Thread Design in 2006. In recent years, Louise have been pursuing her passion in CSR work and appointed as the Executive Director of the World Kindness China, she works closely with NGOs, in developing their organizations through their own brand management and marketing. In 2015, Louise founded DVF Management. DVF provides strategic design, business consulting, and funding resources.
