Shanghai LGBTQIA and Family
Family and piety are one of the most important values of our culture here in China. Respecting your elders as kids, taking care of your parents when you grow up then having your own children to continue the lineage of the family name (with a partner of the opposite sex). It is wholesome, but it can also create pressure if this isn’t the life you envision for yourself.
In the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai we have an amalgam of subcultures that lead to a seemingly more “open” or “accepting” culture overall. But is it really? You can hold hands with your same-sex partner on the street but what happens when you go home?
What does piety mean to you and what does it mean to your parents?
Is having a biological family the most important way to show piety?
Is maneuvering within the boundaries set by your parents the safe place or a repressed way to live life?
There is no right or wrong answers, only the unique experiences that we each come from. Please share what you have got on your chest!
