ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival – 2015 Short Film Competition Nominees

Shanghai, 25th May, 2015 – ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (ShPFF) announces the nominees in five categories for its Chinese queer short film competition: Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Sound & Music and Queer Vision Award.



This year sees three nominees in the Best Film category. In Clay of Indigo, director Zeyu Xu explores inner conflict and memory through a young gay man living in a small traditional southern Chinese village. The film is also nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and Best Sound & Music award. A Straight Journey: Days and Nights in Their Kingdom (dir. masamojo) documents LGBTQ Chinese and their relative’s view on queer family and life. A City of Two Tales (dir. Tony Zhiyang Lin) tells the story of two older gay men living in Hong Kong and their divergent lives. These two films also pick up nominations in the Queer Vision Award category, recognizing achievement in representation of an LGBTQ subject.

Chien-Ming Pan, nominated for Best Cinematography for 100 Apples creates an image of an art school and their students who start to realize their sexuality. Jordan Schiele’s camera in 5cm does close-up on suffocating space and relationships inside National Ballet of China troupe. Fábio Mota is nominated for The Birthday, informed by the perspective of two young women for a fairytale view of Berlin. In Best Screenplay category, X-Love (written and directed by Wang Jiawen) plays with love and misdirection in a blossoming lesbian romance.
