In commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), the Shanghai American Center will host a screening of “Boys Don’t Cry,” a film based on the true story of a transgender man (played by Hilary Swank, who won an Academy Award for the role) that touches on themes of identity, courage, freedom, and empowerment. IDAHOT is observed in over 130 countries annually on or around May 17 to draw public attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBT individuals internationally.
